– WARNING: not for the faint hearted!
So here’s the brief:
Oprah’s favourite doctor – Dr Oz – has revealed that the average woman will use (and consume) about 3kg of lip products (balm, gloss, lipstick) every 10 years. Ever wondered what’s in your lipstick? POV: A moment on the lips means you will eat it!
Remember: A moment on the lips means you will eat it! If you seriously want to detoxify your beauty regime – start with your lip products. Here’s what to look for and what to avoid!
1.Parabens (e.g., methylparaben, propylparaben) •Used to keep products fresh but may mess with your hormones.
2.Mineral Oil & Petrolatum •Made from crude oil and can contain harmful impurities.
3.Lead & Heavy Metals •Sometimes found in tiny amounts as contaminants. Lead is toxic and builds up in your body over time.
4.Artificial Dyes (e.g., Red 6, Yellow 5) •Synthetic colours from petroleum or coal tar, which can cause skin irritation.
5.Fragrance (Parfum) •A mix of mystery chemicals that can trigger allergies or hormone issues.
6.Silicones (e.g., dimethicone) •Gives lipstick a smooth feel but not eco-friendly and can clog pores.
7.Butylated Compounds (BHA, BHT) •Preservatives that may disrupt hormones and have potential health risks.
8.Carmine (CI 75470) •A red colour made from crushed bugs, which some people may be allergic to.
What to Use Instead:
•Look for natural oils and waxes (like shea butter or jojoba oil).
•Use products with mineral-based colours (like mica’s or iron oxides).
•Choose brands labelled as organic, vegan, or cruelty-free.
