How to Choose the Right Mineral Foundation Colour

If you’ve ever stood in front of a makeup counter wondering whether you should choose Warm, Neutral or Cool, you’re certainly not alone.

In fact, it’s probably the question I’m asked more than any other.

After spending over 45 years analysing colour, I can honestly say that choosing the right mineral foundation isn’t about finding one “perfect” shade. It’s about understanding your natural colouring.

Its a simple collection of clues.

When I analyse someone’s complexion, I never rely on just one feature.
I build an overall picture.

I look at the colour of your veins, but I also notice how easily your skin flushes, whether you tan or burn, the colour of your freckles, your natural hair colour, your eye colour and even the colours that make your face come alive.
Each clue adds another piece to the puzzle.

That’s why two people with blue eyes may need completely different foundations, while someone with dark brown eyes may suit exactly the same colour family as someone with grey eyes.

It’s always the overall harmony that matters.

Start by deciding whether you’re naturally Cool, Neutral or Warm

It’s easy to begin in one of three places.

Cool

If your complexion has rosy, pink or porcelain tones, silver jewellery flatters you, your veins are blue, and you burn more easily than you tan, you’ll probably feel most at home in our Cool family.

Neutral

If you can comfortably wear both gold and silver jewellery and your colouring doesn’t appear obviously pink or obviously golden. You may have green or green/blue veins, you’ll probably begin with Neutral.

Warm

If your complexion has peach, apricot or gentle golden warmth, your veins are green and you tan fairly easily and warm colours bring your skin to life, you’ll usually begin with Warm.

Don’t worry if you don’t fit every description perfectly. Very few people do.

Now let’s fine-tune your warmth

Beige

Beige sits beautifully between Cool, Neutral and Warm.

Think of it as adding a gentle softness to the complexion rather than obvious warmth. It’s one of our most versatile colour families and suits many fair to medium British complexions, especially if you feel that warm foundations are a little too yellow but cool foundations leave you looking slightly washed out.

Gold

Gold generally sits between Warm and Olive.

Rather than creating a peachy warmth, it introduces a richer golden glow and is particularly useful if you’d like to soften redness or enhance naturally golden skin. It is often especially flattering on people with naturally golden undertones, including many East Asian complexions, although it can suit anyone whose skin has that beautiful golden quality.

Olive

Olive is in a family all of its own.
If you’ve ever tried foundation and thought, “They all look too pink,” or “Everything looks too yellow,” you may well have olive undertones.

Olive complexions have a subtle muted quality that many traditional foundation ranges struggle to capture, which is why having a dedicated Olive family makes such a difference.

Identifying your depth comes next

Once you’ve discovered your colour family, choosing your depth becomes much easier.

Whether your complexion is Pale, Light, Medium, Deep or Ultimate Deep, you’re simply choosing how light or rich your skin naturally is within your chosen colour family.

Then choose the foundation that suits your skin.

Colour is only part of the story

The next decision is how much coverage you’d like.

If you want precise shade matching and buildable coverage, Classic Foundation offers the widest range of undertones and can be applied as lightly or as generously as you wish.

If you prefer a softer, natural finish, Soft Matt Foundation provides gentle coverage across broader-spectrum shades and is free from titanium dioxide.

If you love a fresh, barely there look, Minimalist Foundation gently enhances rather than conceals and is also free from titanium dioxide.

One thing I always tell my clients is this

There isn’t always one correct foundation. Some people want to match their natural colouring exactly. Others love to add a little warmth, soften redness or create a healthy golden glow all year round. Neither approach is right or wrong.

Understanding your natural colouring simply gives us the best place to begin. From there, we can create the complexion that makes you feel your most confident.
